Sustainability at Georgia-Pacific

Georgia-Pacific, maker of Lotus and Moltonel, is one of the leading producers of tissue and paper products and we are committed to continuously improving our environmental performance for the benefit of customers, consumers and communities alike.  We have a long history of being a sustainable company, making products that improve people's lives and doing so in a responsible manner that balances social, environmental, and economic interests.

The biggest natural resource for our products is a renewable one: trees.  We often forget that wood is one of the most sustainable raw materials, provided that it is legally harvested and sourced from responsible forest certification programs.  We work with a variety of certification programs which many of you will have heard of, such as:

  • The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC)
  • Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
  • Sustainable Forest Initiative (SFI)
  • Canadian Standards Association Sustainable Forest Management Standard (CSA)

In addition to our sustainable forestry practices, we are also committed to reducing our overall water consumption, identifying opportunities to minimize the use of chemicals throughout our production processes and reducing the amount of waste we dispose of.

Some of the activities in these areas include:

  • Water use and management: in all manufacturing sites more than 90 percent of the water we use is continuously reused.
  • All our manufacturing sites strive for maximum recycling of waste by avoiding landfills, if alternatives exist.
  • Use of chemicals: over the years we have developed strict processes and protocols for handling and using hazardous chemicals, and proactively have replaced some chemicals with lower-risk alternatives.
  • All our mills have environmental management systems in place to control and improve their environmental performance. Several have opted for 3rd party certification such as Castelnuovo (EMAS), Stubbins (ISO 14001), Hondouville (ISO 14001), Nokia (ISO 14001), Bridgend (ISO 14001), Oughtibridge (ISO 14001),Cuijk (ISO 14001), and Karamusel (ISO 14001).
